Brazil · Agribusiness

The grain is real. The proof should be too.

Contango is the infrastructure that makes a lot of grain deposited in a warehouse exist in digital form as well — verifiable, traceable, and tradable without having to leave where it is.

What Contango is

Infrastructure, not a marketplace for investors

The distinction matters, and it is not a legal formality. Contango sits under an operation that already happens — it does not create a new thing to be bought.

Not an exchange

Contango does not buy, sell or broker anything, and never touches the money. It is the layer that records what happened, connecting participants that already trade with each other.

Backed one to one

Every digital unit corresponds to a real quantity of grain, held in a warehouse and validated before issuance. Nothing digital exists before the physical lot has been inspected.

Built on existing instruments

Brazilian agribusiness has used warehouse receipts (CDA) for two decades. Contango does not replace that instrument — it digitises the process around it.

Why now

The market changed before the infrastructure did

Proof is becoming mandatory

Traceability and proof of origin are shifting from competitive advantage to entry requirement in the largest buying markets — European deforestation rules being the clearest example.

The paperwork already exists

The instrument that formalises a deposit is well established in Brazil. What blocks it in practice is that issuing on paper is laborious enough that almost nobody does it.

The volume is not small

Brazil is the world's largest exporter of soy, and among the largest of corn, coffee, sugar and cotton. Almost none of that flow carries verifiable, machine-readable provenance today.

Architecture

Blockchain is the trust layer, not the headline

Contango is built on the Stellar network, usingSoroban smart contracts. That describes how the system is designed — the change it delivers is operational, not technological: verifiable origin, a history that travels with the asset, and the ability to sell without emptying the silo.

Nobody in the chain needs to understand blockchain to use it, or to audit it.
